Ahmedabad (or Amdavad), located on the banks of the Sabarmati River, is the administrative headquarters of the Ahmedabad district and largest city of Indian state Gujarat. The former capital of Gujarat is the seventh largest city in India concerning population. It is 23 km away from its twin city – the state capital Gandhinagar. The Manchester of India holds country’s second oldest stock exchange and has emerged as one of the busiest industrial hubs in Western India. Besides, Ahmedabad was chosen as India’s best city to live in by the Times of India in 2012.

The total population of Ahmedabad was 4,920,239 as per 2001 India census which had grown by 29.5% in 2011 India census. However, Ahmedabad’s population, as per 2011 India census, was 6,357,693 (Hindus – 81.56%, Muslims – 13.51%, Jains – 3.62%, Christians – 0.85% and Sikhs – 0.24%) in which 440,000 were living in slums.

It is expected that the population of Ahmedabad will grow by 2067608 in these ten years. Here the overall growth rate is 32.5% which is little higher than the past decade. The population density of former Gujarat capital in 2018 will approximately be 16681.4.

AHMEDABAD, THE CITY WITH THE LOWEST CRIME RATE

Ahmedabad, the second largest producer of cotton, has the lowest crime rate among the 35 Indian cities with a population of more than ten lakhs. It is according to the National Crime Records Bureau study done in 2003. Other study done by a market research firm IMRB says the Manchester of India was the best megacity to live in.
